[Previously on Roswell.]

[Isabel and Jesse at the altar.]

Priest: By the authority committed unto me, I now proclaim that Jesse, Isabel are husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.

[Jesse and Isabel kiss.]

[Mr. Evans and Max outside talking.]

Mr. Evans: You wanted to get down those stairs and into that room, and I need you to tell me why.

[We see Max walking over to the spaceship in the basement of the convenience store.]

Max (Voice Over): I can't ever tell you the truth.

Mr. Evans (Voice Over): Silence is not acceptable.

[We see Mr. Parker and Mr. Evans talking to each other at the CrashDown. Liz on the phone with Max who is in La Jolla, California with Michael. They just saw Isabel kissing Khivar.]

Liz: He's been going around town asking questions.

Max: About what?

Liz: About you and Tess.

Max: Find out what he's after.

[We see Liz discovering the bulletin board in Mr. Evans office that has all the post its about Max, Liz, Tess, the jeep missing, Max saying he went camping but he was really in NYC, Tess disappearing, Tess staying with the Valenti's, etc.]

[Max is in his dad's office, looking at the bulletin board.]

Liz: You okay?

Max: I can't believe this. My whole life is up here.

Liz: Yeah, so is mine. He knows that I'm a part of this.

Max: My own father. [he touches the "Tess" post-it.] Tess.

[Max thinks of that night when he and Tess has sex. Then, he thinks of Tess leaving in the granilith.]

Liz: He's got cards up here for everything. Los Angeles, Utah. . .

[We see Max holding the diamond up to the spaceship and a bright light appears and it starts to hum to life, then he takes the diamond away, and the light disappears.]

Liz: The jeep.

[We see the jeep going over the side of the cliff and bursting into flames.]

Max: I got rid of it.

Liz: Yeah, cuz you thought you would never need it again.

[She takes his hand.]

Max: I was going home.

Liz: Max, maybe you should tell your father. You know let him in on the secret.

Max: [shakes his head] No. No, I can't, not ever.

Liz: Max--

Max: These are my parents, I can't--I can't put them in this kind of danger. They can't ever know the truth.

Liz: So what are you going to do?

Max: That necklace I gave you when I thought I was leaving.

[Liz touches the necklace.]

Liz: Yeah, what about it?

Max: I need it back.

[Liz takes the necklace out from her shirt and stares down at it.]

[Liz and Maria working at the CrashDown.]

Maria: So he didn't take it well, huh?

Liz: Alien death contrives. It'll be okay. Let Max talk to Michael.

[Michael rings the bell.]

Maria: Right.

[She gets the order from Michael.]

Michael: So when does Billy get here?

Maria: I don't know. I thought he'd be here by now.

[Maria walks by Liz.]

Liz: Billy who?

[Maria slides the order to someone beside them [we don't see who it is] and sits beside Liz.]

Maria: [grins] Billy Gardon.

Liz: First kiss Billy? He's coming here?

Maria: Yes, he's on his way to New York.

Kyle: [who apparently has been sitting beside them the whole time] Wait a minute, wait a minute. Your ex-boyfriend is coming to visit. That's not legal.

Maria: No, he's not my ex-boyfriend. We kissed once 4 years ago, I was 14, and Michael knows all about it.

Michael: Yeah, we're all going to dinner.

[He hands Liz an order.]

Liz: No. No mayo on that one. (to Maria:) Um, so, where's he going to stay?

Maria: [laughs] At my house.

Kyle: Your mom's okay with this?

Maria: My mom's out of town.

Kyle: What?!? [jumps up and walks over to Michael.] Michael.

[Maria laughs]

Michael: It's fine. (to Liz:) Here's your no mayo. [he hands Liz the order]

Kyle: Michael, Michael, Michael, let me explain something to you. Here on planet earth, we have this thing called jealousy.

Michael: Kyle, relax. I have nothing to be jealous about. They were 13-year old geeks at band camp.

Maria: Okay, first of all, it was a song writer's workshop [she grabs Kyle by his shirt collar and pulls him away from Michael and back to his stool.] and, uh, Billy wasn't a geek, he was just a little skinny, he had a little acne on his face, but--

Michael: And braces.

Maria: We all had braces. All right fine, he was a little bit of a geek.

Kyle: And you kissed him.

Maria and Michael: Would you shut up.

[Someone walks in, Maria walks over to him.]

Maria: Hello. Table or booth?

Dude: It's me.

Maria: Billy? No.

Billy: Yeah.

Maria: Oh my god! [they hug.]

Billy: Oh god, look at you.

[The eggs on the counter beside Michael explode. He looks down at the mess, confused.]

[Maria laughs and looks over at Michael, Liz, and Kyle.]

Maria: Oh, um, let's go this way.

[They go to the opposite side of the Cafe, away from them.]

[Kyle looks over at Michael.]

Kyle: Guess the braces worked.

[Liz tries not to smile and looks away. Michael looks down at the exploded eggs again.]

[Opening Credits.]

[Maria and Billy sitting at a table outside in front of the CrashDown Cafe.]

Billy: God, the last time I saw you, you were like 13 going on 30.

Maria: And you were like 98 pounds going on this, you look great.

Billy: Oh, yeah. Don't take this the wrong way, but have you looked in the mirror? I mean, you went from the girl no one wanted to dance with to the prom queen.

Maria: Now how am I suppose to take that the wrong way? And shut up.

Billy: I'm serious. Really. You look great, Maria.

Maria: Thanks. [clears her throat.] So, uh, how long are you staying?

Billy: Uh, just a couple of days. Uh, is it cool with your mom, me staying over?

Maria: Oh, sure, yeah, and anyway, she's, uh, she's actually going to be out of town for a couple of days.

Billy: Oh... Well, uh, I can't wait to hear what you've been working on.

Maria: Working on?

Billy: Your music.

Maria: Oh.

Billy: God, I can still remember some of the lyrics you wrote back in band camp. God [shakes his head.]

Maria: Yeah, most of it was crap anyway.

Billy: Oh come on.

Maria: If anyone asks though, it was a song writer's workshop.

[Billy nods.]

[Michael in back of the Cafe cooking.]

[Max sneaks in the back.]

Max: [whispering] Michael.

Michael: [looks up and sees Max, then looks around.] What are you doing here?

Max: When do you get off of work?

Michael: 10 minutes, but I got plans with Maria and Billy Bob Thorton out there.

Max: Well, something came up, cancel them.

[Max leaves, and Michael goes out to where Maria and Billy are sitting.]

Billy: That was so funny.

[They laugh, Michael walks up.]

Michael: Hey, [he shakes Billy's hand] I'm the boyfriend.

Billy: Hey, Billy. Nice to meet you.

Maria: Ready to go?

Michael: Got to cancel.

Maria: Wait a minute, I was going to cook.

Michael: Something came up.

Maria: What?

Michael: It's work related.

Maria: Oh, of course.

Michael: Steve's wife, Sheryl. Uh, she got the flu, at my other job, so I got to cover for him. Yep, uh, sorry Billy. [slaps him on the back.]

Billy: Oh, no, you gotta do what you gotta do, you know?

Michael: I'll make it up to you, I promise. [he kisses Maria.] Nice meeting you.

Billy: Yeah.

[Michael opens the door and almost runs into Kyle.]

Billy: Seems nice.

Maria: Oh yeah, he's a peach.

[They laugh.]

[Jesse is carrying lots of boxes into the house.]

Isabel: Oh, no, no, no honey, those go in the bedroom [she turns him around.] Those boxes go in the bedroom.

[Jesse laughs.]

Isabel: Oh, you know what, I'm sorry, you were right kitchen.

[Jesse puts down the boxes.]

Jesse: I just remembered, I forgot something. [he picks her up.]

Isabel: Oh, geez. [laughs] wow. You're getting really strong.

Jesse: Okay, it's tradition. [he carries her into their house.] Mrs. Rameriz, welcome to your new home.

Isabel: Thank you Mr. Rameriz. [whispers] I love you so much.

Jesse: [whispers] I love you too.

[They kiss. The phone rings]

Isabel: I should get that.

Jesse: And I should get more boxes, but we should--

Isabel: Continue this later.

Jesse: [nods] Yes.

[They kiss. Jesse goes outside to get more boxes, Isabel answers the phone.]

Isabel: Hello?

Max: Did you find your healing stone?

Isabel: Yes, I did. It's in the box that I said it was going to be in. You are way over-reacting to the whole thing.

Max: No I am not, Isabel. Dad is on the war path.

Isabel: He's our father, not the enemy.

Max: Listen to me

Mr. Evans: Isabel?

[Isabel is startled, she spins around and drops the phone. Her father is standing behind her.]

Isabel: [surprised] OH MY GOD!!

Mr. Evans: Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you, the door was open.

Isabel: [picks up the phone] Oh, can I call you back? I'll call you back, bye. [she hangs up the phone]

Isabel: Hi. Dad. Um, what's up?

Mr. Evans: I just wanted to see your new place. It's nice. Cozy. [he hands her a plant] Oh, from your mother and me.

Isabel: Oh, thank you so much. Thank you. Um, [she looks for a place to put the plant.] you really should have waited though until I got a little more, you know, unpacked, and--and situated.

Mr. Evans: OH, that's all right. Where's, uh, Jesse?

Isabel: He's outside by the truck, I think.

Mr. Evans: [sighs] I can't believe how grown up my kids are. You and your new house, Max with his new car.

Isabel: Yeah, grown up. [she puts the plant on top of the mantle above the fireplace.]

Mr. Evans: I guess I have to get used to my new role. I didn't get the chance to help you find this place. I didn't even know Max was getting a new car.

Isabel: Yeah, it all just happened really fast, you know.

Mr. Evans: [nods] Do you even know when he got rid of the jeep?

[Maria and Billy in her kitchen cooking.]

Maria: I can't believe you're doing it. Moving to New York, huh?

Billy: Greenwich Village

Maria: Play in seating bars and coffee shops.

Billy: Well, that was the plan.

Maria: Well, there are plans and there are plans.

Billy: Well, I guess this was the plan.

Maria: Yeah I guess so. So what are your going to do for money?

Billy: As long as I make enough to get by I'll be fine, you know?

Maria: Oh god, that is so romantic I could just SCREAM.

Billy: [laughs] Oh, come on, it was your idea.

Maria: I know, but I mean, I was 13, and talk about going to the big city, even then, I knew it was just talk. Here, taste. [she holds up a spoon with spaghetti sauce on it. Billy tastes it]

Billy: That's pretty good. [he walks over to the refrigerator] That's not how I remember it. I mean even back then, you were pretty dead serious about your music. I mean, god, you're the one who got me the bug. If I hadn't met you, I'd still be playing "Stairway to Heaven" in my mom's garage.

Maria: Well I guess for me, music was just more of, like, a passing thing

Billy: [pouring something into the sauce] Oh, I find that very hard to believe.

Maria: [looks over and sees what he's doing] What are you doing?

Billy: The sauce is just a little thin, so I'm going to show you a little family secret.

Maria: In my sauce, you're putting creamer

Billy: Shhh! Come on. Try it. [he holds up a spoon, and blows on it.] Try it. [she tries it]

Maria: Okay.

Billy: Uhhh huh. mmm huh.

Maria: not bad.

[Jesse is flossing his teeth in front of the mirror and Isabel is sitting on the edge of the bathtub in the bathroom.]

Jesse: Your dad introduced me to some new clients as his son-in-law.

Isabel: This floor is way too hard.

Jesse: You think I should start calling him dad? [laughs] This is too weird. I won't do it.

Isabel: We could use a blanket. I'll be right back. [she leaves]

Jesse: Hey where are you going?

Isabel: To get a blanket.

Jesse: Why?

Isabel: So we can have sex.

Jesse: In here?

[She comes back with a blanket.]

Isabel: Yes, it's tradition that when a couple moves into their new place they make love in every room of the house. [she spreads the blanket on the floor and sits down.]

Jesse: Okay. Let me finish flossing my teeth. Oh, before I forget, your dad--

Isabel: Please!! Can we just not talk about my dad for a second here.

Jesse: [he sits down beside her] Yeah, sure.

[He kisses her neck, she pulls away.]

Isabel: Okay, what did he say?

Jesse: [laughs] He was bringing up Utah.

Isabel: Utah?

Jesse: Yeah, Max's little crime spree. He keeps asking me what I think really happened.

Isabel: What did you say?

Jesse: That I think Max is hiding something. Damned if I know what it is. What do you think?

Isabel: You want to know what I think. [she gets up] I think that as long as my father and Max continue to invade my life with you tradition is going to have to wait. [She leaves and shuts the door.]

Jesse: What did I just do??

[Maria's house. Maria and Billy just finished eating dinner. Billy pulls out a photo album.]

[He opens up the album and shows Maria picture.]

Maria: No, oh my god!! No.

[Billy laughs.]

Billy: There she is right there.

[We see it's 2 pictures of Billy playing the guitar and Maria holding a microphone singing beside him.]

Maria: Look at my hair and my eyes.

Billy: Oh, come on. It's your late-90's, retro Annie Linnex phase, you know. Your were experimenting. I think it was cute.

Maria: Yeah. Right. Burn those now.

Billy: Oh no. These are going to the Big Apple where they'll be prominently displayed in my guitar case where people will be throwing money.

Maria: Look at that! [she grabs the album] Look at--this hair spray alone could choke a horse.

Billy: Okay, well, look past the somewhat flammable hair and see what I see.

Maria: Which is what? Bad eyeliner?

Billy: Naw, dreams. Look, this girl has beautiful dreams, and she makes beautiful music. So what happened to her?

Maria: Nothing. She just grew up.

Billy: Right. Right, right.

[Max and Michael in a secluded place. Max is getting stuff out of the trunk, and Michael is digging a hole right behind the car.

Michael: Is this deep enough?

Max: Almost.

Michael: Max, we've been up all night collecting every conceivable alien artifact that ever crashed in this god forsaken planet, including all of Tess' stuff. I'm tired.

Max: All right, it's deep enough.

[Michael tosses the shovel and sits down.]

Max: We still need your healing stone.

Michael: I think it's at Maria's.

Max: [stops what he's doing and turns to face Michael.] You think it's at Maria's?

Michael: Yeah, I dunno, most likely.

Max: I bet if it were one of your Metallic cd's you'd know where it was.

Michael: Hey, you want to bring that up again. The reason why I got piss is cuz you put "Injustice for All" before "Master of Puppets."

Max: [hands him the bag with all their alien stuff.] Yeah, alphabetical order.

Michael: They go in order of release date.

Max: And you don't know where your healing stone is?

Michael: You still want to sleep on my couch?

[Max's cell phone rings. He answers it.]

Max: Hello?

Isabel: [hiding in the bathroom from Jesse] Jesse is asking all kinds of questions about you Max. You're right, dad is out of control, we have to do something.

Max: Isabel calm down, just tell me what happened.

Michael: What's going on?

Max: My dad has recruited Jesse in this crusade of his.

Michael: Okay, Max, you need to talk to your father. keep your friends close--

Max: And your enemies closer.

Isabel: Our father is not the enemy, Max.

Michael: Talk to him. Make nice, get close find out what he--[we hear the snap of a camera]

[We see a man across the street taking pictures of Max and Michael.]

[Michael knocks on Maria's door. There's no answer. He goes over to the window and looks in. He knocks on the window. Billy, shirtless, answers the door.]

Michael: You haven't left yet.

Billy: Aw, naw, man, late night, sorry. I'm leaving later today.

Michael: How was dinner?

Billy: It was good man, it was good. How's Steve's wife?

Michael: Who?

Billy: Steve's wife with the flu. You covered for him, remember?

Michael: Yeah, she's great, she's fine. Is Maria around?

Billy: No, man. You just missed her. Just missed her. Can I leave her a note or message or something?

Michael: No I'm here to pick something up. [he let's himself in.]

[Michael looks under Maria's bed, and Billy puts his shirt on, sits on the bed, and puts on his shoes.]

Billy: can I help you look?

Michael: [pulls out a guitar and puts it on the bed.] No that's okay.

Billy: Whatcha lookin for?

Michael: [starts looking through her closet.] Something I need.

Billy: Hey, when did Maria stop writing music?

Michael: She messes around with it once and a while. [he finds the healing stone and slips it in his pocket when Billy isn't looking.]

Billy: [picks up the guitar that Michael put on the bed.] Well, how often does she mess with it?

[he starts playing the guitar.]

Michael: Is this going somewhere?

Billy: No, I mean maybe, I dunno. I just--I'm just wondering if she's giving up on writing and singing all together.

Michael: I really wouldn't know.

Billy: Well listen man, she's really good. I mean, she's really good.

Michael: yeah, I'll keep that in mind. Guess what I'm looking for isn't here.

Billy: Well, I'd tell her you stopped by, but I got a bus to catch.

[Michael leaves.]

[CrashDown, Michael is preparing someone's plate and Maria is waiting to serve it.]

Maria: Ooh, you know that sauce looks a little thin. You know what you should do? You should put half and half in there.

[Michael makes a disgusted face.]

Michael: It's not coffee.

Maria: It works. Billy showed me. It gives it heft.

Michael: I don't put dairy products in my meat sauce. It's not kosher.

Maria: Okay. [she looks down at the salad he put on the counter.] I said no cheese in the Nebula Salad.

Michael: Forgot. [he picks the cheese out of the salad.] Listen, I was thinking about skipping out on bowling tonight, and maybe we could make up for last night.

Maria: That is so sweet, but I kinda have plans. Just--

Michael: Plans with who?

Maria: It's--It's nothing. Thing. Just me and Billy we're gonna go--

Michael: Billy?? Isn't he on the bus?

Maria: He missed it. He's staying another night.

Michael: Another night??

[The salad explodes into Maria's face.]

Maria: What did you do that for? You could have hurt me.

Michael: Sorry, I'm not...sure...what happened.

[Max waiting for his dad in his dad's office. His dad walks in.]

Mr. Evans: Max?

Max: Hey dad.

Mr. Evans: What are you doing here?

Max: I think we need to talk.

Mr. Evans: I agree completely.

Intercom: Your 11:30 is here.

Mr. Evans: Give me 10 seconds. (To Max:) I'm sorry, I've got a meeting waiting.

Max: No, its okay. Look, why don't we go fishing like we used to. Get away from all these interruptions.

Mr. Evans: Sounds good. When?

Max: Tomorrow.

Mr. Evans: Great, I'll pick you up early. Gotta get a jump on those fish.

[The same man that was taking pictures of Max and Michael walks into the office.]

Max: Excuse me. [he walks past the man.]

[Mr. Evans and the man go into his office. The man pulls up the bulletin board and looks at the post its.]

Man: I saw him and that friend of his out in the desert.

Mr. Evans: What were they doing?

Man: I couldn't really tell from where I was standing, but I got some pictures. [he hands him the pictures.]

Mr. Evans: What else did you get for me?

Man: A receipt from the last time your son filled up his jeep. [he hands him the receipt] First week in May.

Mr. Evans: That's when Tess disappeared. [he pins the receipt on the bulletin board beside the post it that says "Jeep missing"] Do you think these 2 events are connected?

Man: There's only 3 reasons why a person gets rid of a vehicle. 1. They sell it, 2. They ruin it in order to bill the insurance company, or 3. They destroy it to hide something.

Mr. Evans: What do you think my son is trying to hide?

Man: You better find that jeep Mr. Evans.

[Maria comes home carrying groceries.]

Maria: Billy, I hope you're okay with hamburgers tonight, cuz that's what you're getting.

Billy: Oh hamburgers are fine.

[Maria sees he's playing a guitar.]

Maria: Why is that out?

Billy: Michael stopped by today and this ended up on the bed, so I am tuning it for you.

Maria: Why?

Billy: Cuz it's out of tune, doll.

[Maria puts down the groceries.]

Maria: Put it back.

Billy: All right, give me just a second

Maria: [she grabs the guitar] You know what? Forget it. I'll put it back.

Billy: Hey, what's wrong?

Maria: I invite you into my stuff and you go through my stuff. [she puts the guitar on her bed.]

Billy: Where is all of this coming from? It's a guitar baby.

Maria: No, it's not.

[She slams her door in his face.]

[CrashDown. Michael just locked up. Liz is at the counter filling up the sugar containers.]

Michael: It was a pretty busy night, huh?

Liz: Mmm-hmm.

[Michael sits beside her.]

Michael: How much uhh, money do you think we pull in on a night like tonight?

Liz: You know that you really suck at small talk. Why don't you just tell Dr. Parker what's on your mind.

Michael: Okay, tell me, do I need to be worried about this Billy guy?

Liz: No, you don't. He's completely harmless.

Michael: But you think he's good looking, right?

Liz: Uhh, well, yeah, if you like that sort of thing, I guess.

Michael: The good looking sort of thing.

Liz: Michael.

Michael: Do you really think he missed his bus?

Liz: [laughs] Yes, I do. Haven't you ever miss a bus before?

Michael: No, cuz I don't take the bus. And I don't write songs. And I don't cook with freakin half and half [The sugar container explodes.]

Liz: Hey! M--Michael!

Michael: Sorry my powers are out of control.

Liz: Would you look at this mess, my dad is going to freak.

Michael: Relax [he holds up his hand] I'll fix it... [his powers didn't work.]

Liz: Please Michael you need to calm down.[he tries again to fix it.] Okay, everything is going to be fine with you and Maria. Trust me.

Michael: She cooked him Italian food last night.

Liz: [looks down] Oh...

Michael: I knew it. It's a problem.

Liz: No. No, it's not a problem. It's just, umm, it's food.

Michael: No Liz. [he gets up.] It's Italian food. [he walks away.]

Liz: Michael please don't do anything stupid or alien or both! PLEASE!

[Maria is sitting on her bed. We hear Billy playing his guitar in the other room. The guitar is lying in front of her. She touches it. She's obviously been crying. She gets herself together, then opens her door.]

Maria: Try going in a F major 7. Please. I--I can't listen to you anymore. Just try going into a F major 7.

[Billy tries it in a F major 7, then smiles.]

Billy: Not bad. [laughs]

Maria: Oh, please. I totally fixed it for you.

Billy: Okay. Now let's see if you remember this one. [he starts playing.]

[Maria sways her head to the music.]

Billy: So what about earlier?

Maria: Yeah, I'm sorry I went off on you.

Billy: You gonna tell me about it?

Maria: That guitar belonged to a friend of mine. His name was Alex. He died last year.

Billy: [stops playing] I am so sorry. I am so sorry. I had no idea.

Maria: [sits beside him] His parents wanted me to have his guitar but I--I just couldn't bring myself to play it.

Billy: Bad memories.

Maria: [nods] He was only 17. He had his whole life. His whole life...

Billy: Did you and Alex write songs together?

Maria: Not really. We tried once, but I just don't partner well. I dunno, you're like the only person I ever trusted in that way.

Billy: So, if you guys were writing songs, then that means you were singing up until...

Maria: Until his funeral. Yep, that was the last time.

Billy: Well. I guess tonight is a special night. [he starts playing]

[Maria sings.]

Maria [singing]: I wish I could read your mind. Words don't mean a thing. I've given you all my time. All you do is leave. [We see Michael looking through her window] And if you were standing here in front of me. I know you would say, there's nothing ohh so precious as something that's gone away. And if there's a reason. I just don't want to know. Why you feel the need [Michael is clearly pissed. He walks away.] to love me so. [Michael is walking down the street, pissed. As he walks by the parked cars the windows explode and the car alarms go off.] Only when you go. Only when you go.

[Michael storms into his apartment waking up Max who was asleep on the couch.]

Max: What happened?

Michael: [sits beside Max] It's over.

Max: What my dad found something? What?

Michael: No, it's not that. I saw Maria and what's his name, Billy, together.

Max: What? Together as in...together?

Michael: Worse.

Max: What could be worse?

Michael: They were singing together.

Max: [sits up.] So you're jealous.

Michael: I'm not jealous! [the lamp behind them breaks.]

Michael: My powers are slightly out of whack.

Max: Out of whack?

Michael: I've been blowing things up all day.

Max: Get them under control.

Michael: I can't.

Max: Michael, you have to get yourself together. What if this happens in front of my father?

Michael: You know what? I don't care about your father or the stupid investigation.

Max: All right, all right. Look Michael, I'm sorry. We're part human, right? We're suppose to have feelings. You keep them bottled up like this, they're gonna get out sometime.

Michael: What should I do?

Max: Talk to her.

Michael: That's it? Just talk to her.

Max: yeah.

Michael: Okay. Sure. [Michael goes into his bedroom.]

[Next morning. Max and his dad are in the middle of the lake on a fishing boat.]

Mr. Evans: I've missed this.

Max: Yeah, me too.

Mr. Evans: So, why did you get rid of the jeep?

Max: [shrugs his shoulders.] Got sick of it. Plastic doors, the roof took forever to get on and off.

Mr. Evans: Uh huh. Well, I hope you got a good price for it.

Max: Equivalence.

Mr. Evans: Huh, so who bought it?

Max: This guy at school. He drove across country to college. To Cornell, I think.

Mr. Evans: Huh, it was a fun car. [laughs] Remember that guy we bought it from?

Max: Yeah. Now he was scary.

Mr. Evans: I thought he was going to shoot us.

Max: Yeah, you wouldn't meet his price.

Mr. Evans: [laughs] I did when the gun fell out of his boot. [shakes his head.] How old were you?

Max: 15.

Mr. Evans: Yeah... I'm just surprised that, uh, you would sell it without telling me first.

Max: It was sort of spontaneous.

Mr. Evans: [nods] And you say that this guy who bought it, he was going to drive it all the way to Cornell?

Max: Yeah, he was planning on fixing it up first.

Mr. Evans: Right.

Max: I saw the board in your office. I know what you're doing.

Mr. Evans: And what am I doing?

Max: It isn't right to spy on your own son.

Mr. Evans: I'm not spying. I'm trying to figure out what's going on. Is my concern for you a threat?

Max: Do I threaten you?

Mr. Evans: You frighten me Max. I don't think I know who you are anymore. I'm beginning to think I've never known.

Max: I'm your son.

Mr. Evans: With secrets. And my biggest fear is that they are terrible secrets. That you're in trouble and that I can't help.

Max: You can't help, because I'm not in trouble.

Mr. Evans: Not in trouble? Max. If it weren't for me you'd be rotting in jail right now. I put my reputation on the line for you, and I still don't know why.

[Mr. Evans' cell phone rings.]

Mr. Evans: What? Yeah wait there. (to Max:) We're done. Let's head in.

Max: Dad

Mr. Evans: We're done.

[CrashDown. Maria is working. Michael comes up behind her and whispers in her ear.]

Michael: Hey.

Maria: Hey back.

Michael: Can I say something?

Maria: Back room.

[They go in back]

Maria: Do we have a problem?

Michael: No we don't. I do.

Maria: How can I help?

Michael: Be patient with me.

Maria: Always.

Michael: Don't say it like that like I'm a kid.

Maria: That's not what I meant. What are you worried about? Really. What can I do?

Michael: Tell your friend to leave. He shouldn't be here. It's not a good time.

Maria: Not a good time? [she starts to walk away.] Let me ask you a question Michael--

Michael: Here we go.

Maria: No, don't do that.

Michael: You ask what can I do and I tell you.

Maria: When is it a good time?

Michael: To step up with an old boyfriend?

Maria: He is not an old--Ohh--Would you just--

Michael: Where's your patience now?

Maria: When is it a good time to take a small step back from this non-stop alien hootenanny.

Michael: We're in danger. Max's father--

Maria: I know.

Michael: Yeah, and you don't care cuz that Billy guy!!

[The shelf starts shaking, and everything on it falls down and breaks.]

Maria: Michael.

Michael: You're going to leave me for him.

Maria: No. No. Okay, I'll tell him.

Michael: Thank you. [he walks to her.]

Maria: [he leans in, she stops him] It's what I do. [shakes her head] It what I always do.

[She walks out.]

[Kyle is at work and on the phone with Max. Max is at Michael's]

Kyle: Max, I think we got a problem.

Max: What is it?

[Michael walks up to Max.]

Kyle: Your dad just called for a tow truck.

Max: Where?

Kyle: At mile marker 16. Out on Route 7

Max: [looks at Michael] They found the jeep.

[Maria just came home. Billy is sitting on the couch playing his guitar.]

Billy: Hey.

Maria: Hey. I have to tell you something.

Billy: What?

Maria: You have to go.

Billy: Right this second?

Maria: Yeah.

Billy: I gotta get my stuff. [he stands up] Is this about Michael? I mean, am I in the middle of something?

Maria: No, it--it's complicated. It's just my life, I can't have more than one thing going on. It's not you. It has nothing to do with you.

Billy: That's too bad.

Maria: What's that suppose to mean?

Billy: The truth? [she nods] Maria, I missed my bus on purpose.

Maria: Why?

Billy: Cuz it was going to buy us more time. Decide what you want in life, and live it.

Maria: That's terrible advice.

Billy: You gave it to me.

Maria: Oh, that explains it.

Billy: 4 years ago, our last night at camp.

Maria: I was 13.

Billy: Well you know what? That night stuck with me. You stuck with me. That kiss stuck with me. It was my first one.

Maria: You told me that you kissed tons of girls.

Billy: I lied. [sighs] I don't know. I was just [he walks closer to her] I was hoping that--

Maria: I'm with someone.

Billy: Yeah, I met him.

Maria: Look, you don't understand. Michael is just--

Billy: Stopping you?

Maria: Stopping me. From what?

Billy: From, I don't know, from life. From this. [He kisses her and she definitely kisses back.]

[Good Ole Bob [THE JEEP] is being pulled onto the road. Kyle, Mr. Evans, and that guy who took those pictures of Max and Michael are there.

[Max, Michael, and Isabel are looking on from afar.]

Isabel: This is bad.

Michael: What are you going to tell your father, Max?

Max: I'm not going to tell him anything. He doesn't trust me anymore.

Michael: Who does he trust?

[They both look at Isabel, she looks back, then looks away.]

[Maria and Liz are laying on Liz's bed.]

Liz: And then you kissed him?

Maria: Yes I did.

Liz: Where is he right now?

Maria: At my house.

Liz: Wha--what were you thinking?

Maria: I don't know.

Liz: Okay, and that's all that it was, it was just a kiss.

Maria: Maybe. You know? Maybe not.

Liz: Okay, let's just talk about the kiss for one second. Was there any passion?

Maria: Tons.

Liz: Oh.

Maria: I know. It's not like that kind of passion, it was like it woke me up.

Liz: Like Sleeping Beauty.

Maria: Yeah, I guess. Do you think I've been asleep all this time?

Liz: Well, yeah I think you've been trying to remember who you used to be for a long time.

[Maria looks as if she's going to say something, but doesn't.]

Liz: Say it.

Maria: It's just--sometimes I feel like I've paid this huge price for knowing Michael and knowing these aliens. It's like-- God I didn't--I didn't think I'd end up here dealing with this crap everyday. I mean, I love Michael, and I do sort of love this ridiculous soap opera, but [sighs] I just--I can't take it anymore. I feel like I'm trapped, and I'm never going to get out.

Liz: I know.

Maria: [she sits up] I mean....I didn't sign up for this.

Liz: [she sits up.] Yes you did. We all did.

Maria: I know. It's just... I had this dream once... I mean, maybe I still do. I don't know.

Liz: well, maybe sometimes, you have to go after your dreams. But who am I to tell you to just give him up, because without your dreams, you're just me.

Maria: Liz.

Liz: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. That sounded way too self pitying, and this isn't about me. It's just that, um, you know, I'm committed to going down this road with Max. You know, good, bad, different. I'm committed.

Maria: Mmm-hmm

Liz: And I've given up a lot along the way, so unless you're sure that's what you want to do with Michael, don't be so quick to give up your dreams.

[Maria sighs.]

[Maria's house. Billy is getting his things together. Maria walks in.]

Maria: Hey. I had this insane idea.

Billy: What?

Maria: that we do what we planned. That I go to New York with you.

Billy: Well... What about your mom?

Maria: Well, I know that she'll want me to finish high school.

Billy: Not a bad idea.

Maria: No, so after I graduate.

Billy: Great.

Maria: Maybe.

Billy: Maybe.

Maria: No, I just don't know if this is what I want to do, and I don't know if you and I--

Billy: Hey. Hey. You don't owe me an explanation. I screwed things up.

Maria: No you didn't.

Billy: Yes I did. I should have known better. I changed the whole flow between us. Well, I've been wanting to kiss you for about 4 years, and I'm a guy, so I took a shot.

Maria: I just think I may have given you the wrong impression.

Billy: No you didn't. We're fine. Okay, and if I did anything to make you feel bad, I'm sorry. I just wish you hadn't of...

Maria: What?

Billy: I wish you hadn't hidden yourself away with that guitar. [he grabs his stuff and opens the door.] You gonna come see me in the village?

Maria: Yes.

Billy: I'll get you front row seats.

Maria: And I will throw my underwear at you [laughs, and suddenly stops and looks down.]

[Billy looks down.]

Billy: Bye Maria.

Maria: Bye.

[He leaves. She walks away and kicks the chair.]

[Isabel and Jesse's house. Jesse and Mr. and Mrs. Evans are eating at the dining room table.]

Mrs. Evans: I mean, it's newly upholster, and it has a dark print with big, pink cabbage roses.

[Isabel joins them.]

Jesse: I don't know if that will really, uh...

Mr. Evans: Hey, hey, hey, you can't beat the price.

[Isabel is thinking of a conversation she had with Max.]

Max (Voice Over): They trust you Isabel.

Isabel (Voice Over): I'm sick of lying to our parents.

Max (Voice Over): There's no other choice.

Isabel (Voice Over): Yes there is. Just tell them the truth. They love us. They'll accept us for who we are.

Max (Voice Over): Or they'll turn us in.

Isabel (Voice Over): They would never do that.

Max (Voice Over): Just like dad would never spy on me? It's too dangerous. For them and for us.

Isabel (Voice Over): You're wrong Max. I want to tell them (aloud:) the truth.

Mrs. Evans: What hon?

Isabel: What?

Mrs. Evans: Did you say something?

Isabel: The truth. I want to tell you the truth about what's been going on with Max. It's about Tess. Max got Tess pregnant. But she left before the baby was born, so Max may have a child out there somewhere.

Mrs. Evans: Oh my.

Max: The night that she left here, he was so angry that he just drove all night and pushed his jeep off the cliff, because he... was so crazy.

Jesse: God, Isabel. I'm so sorry. [he puts his arm around her.] If--If I had known, I wouldn't have--

Mr. Evans: I'm sorry too, Isabel. For asking those questions, for putting Jesse in the middle.

Isabel: He would have told you himself, he was just so afraid to disappoint you.

Mr. Evans: Thank you for finally telling us the truth.

Max (Over Voice): Did they buy it?

Isabel: [on the phone with Max in the bathroom] Yeah, they bought everything. You're safe for another day.

Max: Thanks Iz. I owe you.

Isabel: Maybe now we can get back to normal.

[Mr. Evans is in his office looking at a wedding picture of Isabel. He goes over to the bulletin board and pins the picture above the post it that says "Conspirators"]

[Maria is sitting on a picnic table in the park, Michael walks up with flowers in his hands.]

Michael: You wanted to talk which usually means you're gong to kick my ass, so I brought some friends. [he hands her the flowers.]

Maria: [takes the flowers] Thank you. I guess...

Michael: Is he gone yet?

Maria: Yeah.

Michael: Good. [he sits beside her.]

Maria: Feel better?

Michael: Getting there. What are we talking about?

Maria: I want to break up. I want out, because I love you so much. I love you more than you could possibly know.

Michael: I'm lost.

Maria: No, I'm lost. And--and you've been there the whole time to help me through all of it.

Michael: All of what?

Maria: This whole thing. Alien, human, the scary stuff, the bad stuff.

Michael: There was fun stuff too.

Maria: Yeah, but I haven't been honest through any of it.

Michael: Listen if you're trying to tell me that you're bisexual or something. [she closes her eyes and shakes her head.] I'm--I'm cool with that. I'm--I'm... [pauses] Why do you want out?

Maria: Because Michael, I don't think I've ever been in. I mean this girl you've known for the past 3 years, this Maria, it's just not me.

Michael: Of course it you.

Maria: No, it's not the me I used to be.

Michael: Things change.

Maria: [nods] Yeah, things change.

Michael: Just like that. Will you come back to me?

Maria: I don't know [she hands him the flowers and leaves]

[We start to hear Maria sing in the background.]

[He's holding the flowers, they turn black and then into ashes.]

Maria (Singing Voice Over): Breathe within.

[Michael looks down at his hands.]

Maria (Singing Voice Over): I'm looking on your air tonight. Never knowing when you'll cut it off.

[Maria's house. Maria picks up Alex's guitar and looks at it.]

Maria (Singing Voice Over): Oh, you had a way, but looks and hearts sleep alone.

[We see Isabel still in the bathroom staring off into space.]

Maria (Singing Voice Over): I just want a dream that's good. You always seem to have to go.

[We see Mr. Evans still in his office, drinking.]

Maria (Singing Voice Over): So, here I am. Alone again.

[We see Max looking out the window.]

Maria (Singing Voice Over): Waiting for the story to finally end.

[We see Michael laying on his bed thinking about the past:]

[Michael is standing in the rain.]

Maria (Singing Voice Over): While the world spins around.

[Michael kisses Maria "to calm her down."]

Maria (Singing Voice Over): It's out of my hands.

[Michael and Maria dancing at the prom.]

Maria (Singing Voice Over): Don't even try to understand.

[We see Michael lying down again.]

[We see Maria playing Alex's guitar and singing.]

Maria (singing): And I guess it's time to tell you. What you should already know. Oh, you know. I'm better breathing on my own. Allllllllllllllllll alone.
